How the PADI Open Water Course Works

Step One - Academics

Your scuba journey begins before you arrive in Cozumel. Once you sign up, you will receive your PADI eLearning and required course paperwork so you can begin the academic portion online. Completing this in advance helps you arrive better prepared, so you can spend more of your time in Cozumel learning practical scuba skills and enjoying the in-water portions of the course.

Step Two - Confined Water Dives

This is where you begin building real comfort underwater. During this phase of the course, you will complete five confined water dives while learning and practicing the basic scuba skills needed to dive safely. These sessions are generally conducted at Tikila Beach, across the road from the shop. If conditions are not suitable for a comfortable learning environment, training may start in a local pool.

Our teaching style is built around confidence, not rushing. If you need extra time to get comfortable with mask skills, buoyancy, breathing, or basic underwater movement, we work with you until you are ready to move on.

Step Three - Open Water Dives

Your final step is where everything comes together. You will complete four open water dives over two days, giving you the chance to apply your new scuba skills in real diving conditions while exploring some of Cozumel's beautiful underwater scenery.

Open Water Dives 1 and 2 are normally completed from shore, and Open Water Dives 3 and 4 are completed during a two-tank boat trip.

These dives are about more than just checking boxes. They are your introduction to the underwater world as a real diver. By the end of the course, you will not only have demonstrated the skills required for certification, but you will also have experienced the excitement of breathing underwater, exploring reefs, and seeing why so many people fall in love with scuba diving in Cozumel.

Once you complete all course requirements, you will earn your PADI Open Water Diver certification, recognized worldwide.

Shore Dives Only Option

A shore dives only version of the PADI Open Water Course may be available on request. This option includes all four open water training dives from shore instead of completing Open Water Dives 3 and 4 from the boat.

The standard course includes shore training dives and one two-tank boat trip, which gives students the best overall Cozumel scuba certification experience. However, the shore-only option may be helpful for students with scheduling needs, comfort concerns, or weather-related considerations.

The following is included with your PADI Open Water Course:

  • PADI eLearning
  • All required scuba equipment, including a dive computer
  • One two-tank boat trip for Open Water Dives 3 & 4
  • DAN Student Insurance for added peace of mind
  • All taxes and fees — the price you see is the price you pay
