How Long Does the PADI Open Water Course Take in Cozumel?
Phillip Hetherington Jun 28, 2026
Most students complete the PADI Open Water course at Dive Boutique Cozumel in approximately three days. That assumes you finish the PADI eLearning before you arrive, which we will send you access to after you book.
Here is exactly how it works.
Before You Arrive: eLearning
The PADI Open Water course has an academic component — dive theory, equipment knowledge, hand signals, safety procedures, and dive planning. PADI delivers this online through their eLearning platform, which you complete at home before your trip.
This is a significant advantage. It means you arrive in Cozumel ready to dive, not sit through lectures. You spend your days in the water, not in a classroom.
After your deposit is received, we send your eLearning access. Most students finish it in a few evenings. Plan to have it done before you travel.
If you arrive without completing it, we can work with you, but it will add time to your course. Do it in advance.
Day One: Confined Water Training
Your first day in the water focuses on scuba skills in a controlled, shallow environment. You learn how to assemble and use your equipment, breathe underwater, clear water from your mask, and practice the safety skills you need before moving to open water.
This is done from shore at Tikila Beach, where the water is calm and shallow. The pace is relaxed. You are not rushing through a checklist — you practice each skill until you are comfortable before moving to the next.
Because our courses are private, your instructor is with you the entire time. If something takes longer or you want to repeat a skill, you can. There is no group to keep up with.
Day Two: Open Water Dives 1 and 2
Your second day moves to open water diving from shore. You complete Open Water Dives 1 and 2, applying the skills you practiced the day before in a real reef environment. You will be diving on the reef, not in a pool or confined area, and you will start seeing the marine life Cozumel is known for.
Depths during these dives stay within PADI's training limits for new students. Your instructor is with you and continues guiding your skill development during each dive.
Day Three: Open Water Dives 3 and 4 — Boat Dive
Your final two open water training dives are completed on a two-tank boat trip. You check in at Marina Fonatur at 8:00am, depart at 8:30am, and return around 12:30pm. Your boat dives take you to reef sites like Palancar Reef or Columbia, where you will see why Cozumel has the reputation it does.
After completing Open Water Dives 3 and 4 and meeting all course requirements, you earn your PADI Open Water Diver certification — recognized worldwide and valid for life.
What Is Included
The course is $495 and everything is included:
PADI eLearning, all scuba equipment (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins, tank, weights), a dive computer, DAN student diver insurance, all training dives from shore, one two-tank boat trip, and your PADI certification. There are no hidden add-ons.
How Much Time Should I Plan in Cozumel?
Plan for at least four days total. That gives you three days for the course and one day to settle in after travel — arriving the day before your course starts means you are rested and ready, not jet-lagged on Day One.
If you can stay longer, you will have time after certification to dive for fun. Getting your Open Water card in Cozumel and then spending a few more days exploring the reef as a certified diver is one of the better ways to start your diving life.
