Discover Scuba vs PADI Open Water: Which Is Right for You?

Phillip Hetherington   Jun 29, 2026

This is one of the most common questions we get at Dive Boutique Cozumel, and it makes sense. Both get you underwater in Cozumel. But they are very different experiences with different commitments, outcomes, and price points.

Here is a straightforward breakdown to help you decide.

What is Discover Scuba Diving?

Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) is a try-dive experience designed for people who have never scuba dived before and want to see what it feels like. No certification, no prior experience, and no long commitment required.

At Dive Boutique Cozumel, Discover Scuba takes place from shore at Tikila Beach. You get a briefing, learn how to breathe with scuba equipment in shallow water, and then explore the reef with your instructor right beside you. The whole experience takes a few hours and sessions are available daily at 9am, 12pm, and 2pm.

What you do not get is a certification. Discover Scuba is supervised the entire time. You cannot dive without an instructor afterward.

What is the PADI Open Water Course?

The PADI Open Water Diver course is the world's most recognized entry-level scuba certification. After completing it, you can dive with any certified dive buddy to a maximum depth of 60 feet, anywhere in the world, without an instructor holding your hand.

At Dive Boutique Cozumel, the course is private. That means your instructor's attention is entirely on you. You complete the academics through PADI eLearning before you arrive, then spend approximately three days in Cozumel doing confined water skills and open water training dives from shore, plus one two-tank boat trip to dive Cozumel's reef sites.

Everything is included: all scuba equipment, a dive computer, DAN student diver insurance, and your certification. The course is $495.

Choose Discover Scuba If...

You are on a cruise ship and only have a day in Cozumel. You have always been curious about scuba but want to try it before committing. You are traveling with someone who is already certified and you want to experience the reef alongside them. You are not sure if scuba is for you yet.

Discover Scuba is a genuine dive experience on a real reef. Cozumel's water is warm and clear, the reef is colorful, and most first-timers are surprised by how naturally it comes to them.

Choose PADI Open Water If...

You have at least three to four days in Cozumel. You want a certification you can use on every future trip. You have wanted to get certified for a while and this is the trip to do it. You want to explore beyond the shallow water training areas.

Cozumel is one of the best places in the world to learn to dive. The water is calm, visibility is excellent, and the reef is close to shore. Getting certified here means your first real dives as a certified diver are already on one of the top dive destinations on the planet.
